FINDING GOD’S PEACE IN THE STORM OF ANXIETY
There are moments when it feels like anxiety is a raging storm. I know because I’ve been there. The sheer panic would rush over me, a wave so overwhelming it felt like I couldn't breathe. My chest would tighten, and my body would start to numb as I spiraled into hyperventilation. In those moments, I felt trapped, helpless, and utterly alone. But let me tell you something, sister: that crushing weight, that loss of control—it’s not from God. The enemy wants us shackled by these fears, held captive by lies that whisper we’re too weak to face them. Yet God, in His boundless love, is the breaker of every chain. He sees our struggles, He knows our pain, and He offers us His peace.
In John 14:27, Jesus speaks directly to our hearts: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” He knew the turmoil we’d face, and He left us His peace—true, deep, life-anchoring peace.
Anxiety can seem insurmountable, like an immovable mountain. But in God’s hands, every mountain becomes a stepping stone. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Notice the promise here: His peace will guard your heart and mind. Even in the storm, we are shielded by His love.
Let me share four powerful ways God’s Word can help release anxiety’s grip on our lives:
Embrace Prayer as a Refuge
Anxiety can make us feel isolated, but prayer reconnects us to the One who’s always there. Psalm 34:17 tells us, “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; He delivers them from all their troubles.” In moments of panic, I’ve found that whispering a simple, honest prayer—“Lord, help me”—brings a powerful comfort. Lean into Him; He is listening, always.Renew Your Mind with Scripture
Anxiety often stems from fearful thoughts and distorted beliefs. But Romans 12:2 encourages us to be “transformed by the renewing of your mind.” To me, this means filling my mind with truth. Write down verses that speak to you—“God is my refuge and strength” (Psalm 46:1), “The Lord is my shepherd; I lack nothing” (Psalm 23:1)—and keep them close. Whenever fear starts to creep in, use these truths as a shield.Surrender Control to God
Anxiety thrives on control, on our desperate attempts to make everything “just right.” Yet Proverbs 3:5-6 teaches us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Letting go is hard—I know firsthand how much I’ve struggled with it. But God promises to take our burdens, to guide us when we trust in His perfect plan.Find Strength in God’s Promises
Anxiety tells us we’re not enough, that we’re weak. But Isaiah 41:10 counters that lie with truth: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” He is our strength when we have none left. You don’t have to face this alone—He’s got you, and His love is stronger than any fear.
When we look to the Bible, we find countless examples of God’s people battling and overcoming anxiety. One story that resonates with me deeply is that of Elijah. In 1 Kings 19, after a miraculous victory, Elijah fled to the wilderness, overwhelmed and afraid. He told God he wanted to give up, to end it all. But God met him tenderly, providing him with food, rest, and, ultimately, a renewed purpose. God didn’t abandon Elijah in his darkest moment, and He won’t abandon you in yours. He will meet you exactly where you are, offering hope and healing.
Remember, dear sister, anxiety does not define you, nor does it have to control you. The enemy may try to crush you under the weight of fear, but God is here to lift that burden. He is your refuge and strength, your ever-present help in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1). Lean on Him, speak His Word, and know that His love is greater than anything you may face.
Anxiety may roar, but it does not have the final say. God’s peace—the peace that surpasses all understanding—will guard your heart and mind, leading you back to the unshakable security of His love. You are safe in His arms. You are never alone. Reach out to Him, for He is right there, ready to bring you through.
